How hard is it for a small, single pilot helicopter operation to get
FAA Part 135 approval?

You get a big stack of Microsoft Word docs from someone else who has done it, edit lightly (change the names at least!) and submit to the FSDO. Then wait 4-9 months and you're done (though somewhere in the middle they will ask for some changes). We're preparing to go through this process soon.
