This is a great discussion about an important topic. As a low time pilot with a young family to support, I think about this alot. The problem with flying as a hobby is that you are choosing to do something that is both unnecessary and 20 times more likely to kill you than driving a car. For 20 to 40 year olds in the USA, unintentional injuries (i.e. motor vehicle accidents) is the most common cause of death. By flying as a hobby you are significantly and unnecessarily increasing your chances of a premature death. VFR into IMC is hard to do if you take up fishing instead of flying.
