For readers of "A Pattern Language" who are as dense as I was, and can't figure out why it seems to contradict itself, remember this: It's a dictionary, not a novel. Just as we do not construct sentence by using EVERY word in the english language at once, we do not devise our built environments by using every "word" in the "Pattern Language" at once. Those interested in the physical as well as the philosophical aspects of Alexander's work should also seek out "The Linz Cafe" (regrettably out of print) and "The Production of Houses".
