I visited the Gateway Country store in my local area, and was able to check out the PC/TV. I found the integration between PC and TV clumsy and the interface incredibly akward. The final straw was the hideous display with its 800x600 resolution. Even when this product works, it's not great; I could tell within ten minutes of plopping down in Gateway Country's chair that it wasn't for me. If you're curious about this unit, be sure to try it out at a Gateway store before buying. Incidentally, the gateway store is well designed and service seems good (although I didn't test it seriously). Might be a nice place to buy a computer - just not this one. D
Per the recommendation of one of the reviewers at amazon.com and the author himself, I bought both A Pattern Language and A Timeless Way of Building. Pattern Language has the nuts and bolts, but Timeless Way is written with such lyrical beauty that I don't think you should miss it. Read both books together if you can, for each illuminates the other.D
I'm rather saddened by all the hostile comments I see on this page. Phillip Greenspun has done rather well for himself, and I'm always pleased to see that, but I don't think that affects his merits as a person one way or the other. He's very generous with the knowledge and software expertise he pours into his web sites, and I would bet they haven't shown much in the way of financial return. I think he calls himself a scum-sucking yuppie materialist as a way of self-satire, and I find it rather amusing. For another look at the real estate world, see David's Dream House, an exploration into the world of cut-rate (or theoretically cut-rate) real estate in the Los Angeles area.
